Fact no. 01
This was not one Board member’s decision.
On January 20, 2026, the Brevard County School Board voted unanimously to approve the attendance boundary change consolidating Cape View Elementary into Roosevelt Elementary. "Attendance boundary change" certainly sounds better than "closing the only elementary school in Cape Canaveral".
Every member of the
School Board voted yes.
Including Gene Trent. That's clear, right?
This is the same number of board members who voted for many other things over the last four years.
Weird that those unanimous votes are credited to Gene in his campaign materials, but this one... I mean, what could he do? Not vote with everyone else?

The decision did not happen overnight.
Shouldn't this be fact 6? There's the first one up top, then 4 more just up there... Math, amirite? But don't the leading zeroes make everything look authoritative?
- April 2025Facilities and long-range planning discussions begin. No evidence of public comment or concern from Gene.
- September 2025Preliminary attendance-boundary proposals are reviewed.
- November 2025Meetings are held with affected school communities. Gene Trent, their "representative", does not attend these meetings.
- December 2025Capital Outlay Committee votes 11–2 to recommend closure.
- December 9, 2025Board authorizes advertisement of a formal public hearing.
- January 20, 2026Public hearing held. Final School Board vote: 5–0. See how that right side is "0"? That signifies the absense of "no" votes. Including Gene's. Not sure why he's reluctant to stand behind that vote.
The Property
Can an individual Board member “pocket” money from Cape View?
No individual School Board member owns the property or personally sells district property. Literally no one has suggested that they do, of course... but reading comprehension, amirite?.

The Board must act through the legally established process and in the public interest. And this board is known for its transparency, especially our boy Gene.

Public Record: Months of meetings, committee consideration and a legally advertised public hearing preceded the vote.
No Public Record of: Much public comment criticising the consolidation, since it was deemed "off topic" and sent to the unrecorded end-of-meeting hinterlands.

Public Record: Cape View students were reassigned to Roosevelt Elementary — another Brevard public school. It's now almost at capacity! Who will take the overflow? Charters ahoy!
